If you searched "Goodman AC cost" or "Goodman heat pump," you're price-checking. Good. Here are the installed numbers for Goodman next to American Standard, same size, same tier, so you can see what the gap really is before anyone sits at your kitchen table.

This is the comparison we have most often, because we install both. American Standard (Trane Technologies) is the premium brand. Goodman (owned by Daikin since 2012) is the value brand. Neither is a bad choice. They're different choices.

Add $500 to $1,000 per extra half ton, and $500 to $1,000 for a rooftop package version. Every American Standard size and tier is in American Standard prices 2026; every tonnage is in the cost by size guide. These are market ranges, not our price list; our number is a written quote after we've measured the house.

Two things change a split-system price that the tables above don't show. Where the indoor unit goes: an attic (horizontal) install adds roughly $300 to $1,000 over a vertical closet or garage install, for the secondary drain pan and float switch, the harder access, and the longer refrigerant and drain runs. Gas or all-electric: a gas/electric split (gas furnace plus AC) lands within about $1,000 of a heat pump split of the same size and tier; the heat pump condenser costs more, the furnace costs more than an air handler, and it mostly washes. We install both, in both orientations.

The 15-year math

A $2,000 gap on a system that runs 12 to 15 years in the Valley is $130 to $170 a year. That's the real question: is quieter operation, a heavier cabinet and better humidity control in August worth $11 to $14 a month to you? For a long-term home, usually yes. For a rental or a house you'll sell in three years, usually no. Either answer is fine; just make it on the full-life number, not the install-day number.

Two things that are not in the gap: SRP Cool Cash pays the same per ton on both brands at the same staging ($75 single-stage, $150 two-stage, $225 variable-speed per ton), and our labor warranty is the same on both. Rebate details.

Where the price difference comes from

  • Components and build. American Standard tends to use heavier cabinets, quieter compressors and more refined controls at each tier. Goodman keeps parts simpler and more generic, which keeps cost and repair parts cheaper.
  • Efficiency options. Both offer entry, mid and variable-speed tiers. American Standard's top end is more refined; Goodman's variable-speed options cost less.
  • Brand and dealer programs. Premium brands carry more dealer requirements and marketing. That shows up in the price.

Warranty

Both offer 10-year registered parts limited warranties on most residential models, but only if the system is registered within the manufacturer's window (usually 60 days). Builder and flipper Goodman installs often weren't registered, which drops coverage. Labor isn't covered by either manufacturer; that comes from the installer. Check the specific model.

In Phoenix heat

The things that fail first in the Valley (capacitors, contactors, fan motors) fail on every brand. Compressors and coils last longer on a correctly sized, correctly charged system with clean coils, regardless of badge. Installation quality is the biggest variable.

Who should buy which

Goodman makes sense if:

  • It's a rental, a flip you're holding, or you plan to sell in a few years
  • Budget is the main driver
  • You want simple, widely available repair parts

American Standard makes sense if:

  • It's your long-term home
  • You want quieter operation and better humidity control (two-stage or variable-speed)
  • You want the communicating Platinum tier
