Costco HVAC in Phoenix vs. a Local Contractor: What to Compare Before You Sign

How Costco's HVAC program works in the Valley, who actually installs it, which brands you get, the Shop Card, SRP rebates and warranty, and how to compare a Costco quote to a local one.

Short answer: Costco doesn't install air conditioners. Its HVAC program books you a consultation with a local dealer for its approved brands, and that dealer does the work. So a Costco quote is really a quote from that dealer, plus a Costco Shop Card after install. Compare it the way you'd compare any two contractors: same size, same tier, same line items, and the net price after the card and any SRP rebate.

How Costco's HVAC program works

  1. You book a free in-home consultation through Costco's heating and air conditioning page.
  2. Costco matches you with a local dealer for the program's brands (Lennox and Carrier, depending on the market).
  3. The dealer measures the house and quotes equipment and installation together.
  4. If you buy, the dealer installs, and you get a Costco Shop Card or member reward some weeks after the job is complete.

The program is a sales channel. The installer is a local HVAC company, often one you could also call directly.

What's different about a Costco quote

  • Brands are limited to the program's lines. You won't get a Costco quote on American Standard, Trane, Goodman or Bosch. That's fine if you want Lennox or Carrier. It's a limit if you want to compare brands.
  • The Shop Card is real money, but it's a card. Treat it as a discount when you compare, but compare the net price, not the headline.
  • The installer is the warranty. The manufacturer covers parts once the system is registered. Labor comes from the dealer. Ask how many years, in writing, and who you call in August.
  • SRP Cool Cash works the same. Any Arizona-licensed contractor installing a qualifying system can submit SRP paperwork. Make sure the quote shows it as its own line, at the real per-ton amount. APS ended its rebate in January 2026, so an APS line on any quote is out of date. 2026 rebates.

Where Costco can make sense

  • You're set on Lennox or Carrier
  • You value the Shop Card and the comfort of buying through Costco
  • The dealer it sends is licensed, well reviewed and right-sizes the system

Where a local contractor usually wins

  • Brand choice. We install American Standard, Goodman and Bryant, and price more than one option so you can compare tiers.
  • Repairs before replacement. A replacement program only quotes replacements. Our techs aren't paid commission; if the right answer is a $300 part, that's the answer.
  • One phone number. With us, that's Eric.

How to compare a Costco quote to ours

  1. Same tonnage, same SEER2, same staging (single, two-stage, variable)
  2. Matched indoor coil or air handler included, with model numbers
  3. Line set, permit, pad or curb adapter, thermostat, drain and float switch, haul-away
  4. Labor warranty in years, and who honors it
  5. Net price: installed price minus SRP Cool Cash minus the Shop Card
  6. The installer's Arizona ROC license, checked at the ROC contractor search

Questions people ask

Does Costco install AC units in Phoenix?+

Costco doesn't install them itself. Its HVAC program schedules a consultation with a local dealer for the program's brands, and that dealer quotes and installs the system.

What brands does Costco HVAC sell?+

The program works with approved brands, Lennox and Carrier depending on the market. It doesn't offer American Standard, Trane, Goodman or Bosch.

Is Costco HVAC cheaper?+

Not automatically. The price comes from the local dealer, and members get a Costco Shop Card after install. Compare the net price, after the Shop Card and any SRP rebate, against an independent quote for the same size and tier.

Can I get the SRP rebate on a Costco install?+

Yes, if the system qualifies for SRP Cool Cash and the installer is Arizona-licensed. Make sure the rebate is on the quote as its own line.

Who handles warranty on a Costco HVAC install?+

The manufacturer covers parts once the system is registered. The installing dealer covers labor under its own terms. Ask for both in writing.
