Big-box HVAC programs hand the job to a local installer. What that means for price, brand choice, warranty and who you call when it breaks. A plain comparison from a Tempe owner-operator.
Short answer: for most Phoenix-area homes, a licensed local HVAC company is the better pick. You get the installer's own crew, the same brands or better, a price you can compare, and one number to call when something breaks. A national program like Home Depot or Costco can make sense if you want its specific brands, member rewards or financing, but the work is still done by a local contractor, so judge that contractor the same way.
Home Depot and Costco both sell HVAC replacements. Neither sends its own employees to your roof. Both programs book an in-home consultation and hand the install to a local, vetted contractor. That's not a knock on the program. It just means the question is the same one you'd ask any time: who is the installer, and who do you call in year three?
How the programs work
Home Depot. You book online or by phone, a licensed installer comes out to quote, and the work is done by a contractor working through Home Depot's program. Pricing isn't published on the site; you get it at the consultation.
Costco. Costco members book a consultation, and Costco matches you with a Costco-approved local dealer for its approved brands (Lennox and Carrier). The dealer quotes, installs, and members get Costco rewards or cards after installation. Some members report that Costco-program quotes ran higher than independent quotes, so comparing is worth it. Where a big-box program can make sense
- You want a big company standing behind the purchase and a familiar place to complain
- You want the specific brands the program offers
- The member rewards or financing promotion is worth real money to you
Where a local contractor usually wins
- Price transparency. No program margin layered on top. You deal with the company doing the work.
- Brand choice. We install American Standard, Goodman and Bryant, and right-size the equipment to the house. A program limits you to its brands.

Use the same checklist for any installer:
- Same tonnage, same SEER2, same staging (single, two-stage, variable)
- Indoor coil included and matched
- Permit, pad or curb adapter, line set, thermostat, haul-away
- Manufacturer registration done for you (that's what turns on the 10-year parts warranty)
- Labor warranty in years, and who honors it

Should I hire a local HVAC company or a national installer like Home Depot?+
For most Valley homes, a licensed local company. Big-box programs subcontract the install to a local contractor anyway. Going direct gets you the installer's own crew, comparable or better pricing, and one point of contact for warranty and repairs. Look for an Arizona ROC license, strong Google reviews, an owner who answers the phone and an itemized written quote.
Does Home Depot install AC units itself?+
No. Home Depot's HVAC program uses licensed local installers. You buy through Home Depot; a contractor does the work.
Is Costco HVAC a good deal?+
