Thermostat Installation Cost in Tempe & the East Valley (2026) — Standard, Smart, and Heat Pump
A new thermostat installed runs $180 to $450. Smart thermostats, C-wires, heat pump O/B wiring, and SRP/APS rebates. What you're paying for and when to just do it yourself.
A thermostat is the cheapest part of your system and the one most likely to be installed wrong. Heat pumps in particular (most Tempe and Chandler homes have one) need the reversing valve wired and set correctly, or the system heats when you want cool.
What it costs
| Standard programmable thermostat, installed | $180–$300 | Part + labor + system test |
| Smart Wi-Fi thermostat (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell), installed | $250–$450 | Includes setup and app connection |
| Add a C-wire or adapter | $150–$300 | If a spare wire exists; more if a new run is needed |
| Communicating thermostat (variable-speed systems) | $400–$800 | Brand-specific; must match the system |
| Thermostat relocation | $200–$450 | Off a sunny wall or away from a supply vent |
When to DIY and when not to
Fine to DIY: a like-for-like swap on a simple cooling-only or gas-heat system, where the old thermostat has the same wires.
Call us:
- Heat pumps. The O/B setting decides whether the reversing valve is energized in cool or heat. Get it wrong and the system blows warm air in July. We see this a lot after DIY smart-thermostat installs.
- No C-wire on a smart thermostat that needs one.
- Variable-speed or communicating systems. Those need the brand's own thermostat to run the system the way it was designed.
- Thermostat goes blank or the AC won't start after the swap. See thermostat blank.
Rebates
SRP and APS have offered rebates or bill credits on qualifying smart thermostats and demand-response programs. Programs change year to year; check APS & SRP rebates in 2026 or the utility's marketplace before buying.
A thermostat can't fix a failing system
If the system short cycles, runs constantly, or can't keep up in August, a new thermostat is rarely the cure. We'll test the system before we sell you a thermostat. Short cycling · AC runs constantly.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to install a thermostat in Arizona?+
$180 to $300 for a standard programmable thermostat, $250 to $450 for a smart thermostat, installed and tested. Adding a C-wire is extra.
Does a smart thermostat save money in Phoenix?+
It can, mostly by shifting cooling out of SRP and APS peak hours. Utility rebates and demand-response programs can offset the cost.
Why does my AC blow warm air after I installed a new thermostat?+
On a heat pump, the O/B reversing valve setting is probably backwards. Switch it in the thermostat's settings, or call and we'll fix it.
