Thermostat Screen Blank and AC Not Working — The Five-Minute Checks and the Real Causes

A dead thermostat usually isn't a dead thermostat. Batteries, a tripped float switch, a blown 3-amp fuse, or a breaker. How to check each, and what the repair runs if it's more.

A blank thermostat makes it look like the whole system died. Usually the thermostat is fine and something upstream cut its power. Most of the time you can find it in five minutes.

The checks

  1. Batteries. Many wired thermostats still use AA or AAA batteries for the display. Replace them even if the low-battery warning never showed.
  2. The air handler or furnace breaker. The thermostat gets its power from a transformer in the indoor unit. If that unit's breaker tripped, the thermostat goes dark. Reset once.
  3. The float switch. Look at the drain pan under the indoor unit or the switch on the drain line. If water backed up, the switch shuts off power to the thermostat on purpose. Water there means a clogged drain.
  4. The indoor unit's door. A loose panel opens a safety switch.
  5. Smart thermostat C-wire. Nest, Ecobee and other Wi-Fi thermostats need steady power. Without a C-wire, some steal power from the system and go dark or reboot, especially in summer.

If those don't do it

  • Blown 3-amp fuse on the control board. The most common cause after the float switch. It blows when a thermostat wire shorts, often outside at the condenser where a wire got nicked.
  • Failed transformer. No 24-volt power at all.
  • Damaged thermostat wire in the wall or attic.
  • Thermostat failed. Least likely, but it happens.

Replacing the fuse without finding the short just blows the new fuse. We find the short.

What the fixes cost

Fuse replacement + finding the short$150–$300Usually same visit
Float switch reset + drain clearing$150–$300
Transformer$175–$350
C-wire added for a smart thermostat$150–$300If a spare wire exists in the wall

Questions people ask

Why is my thermostat blank after replacing the batteries?+

It's likely not getting 24-volt power from the system. Check the indoor unit's breaker and the drain-pan float switch. A blown control fuse is the next most common cause.

Can a clogged AC drain make my thermostat go blank?+

Yes. Many systems have a float switch that cuts thermostat power when water backs up. It's a safety feature that keeps the pan from overflowing.

Why does my Nest or Ecobee keep going blank?+

Usually no C-wire, so it can't hold a charge. Adding a C-wire or an adapter fixes it.
