AC Contactor Replacement Cost in Tempe & the East Valley (2026)
A contactor is a $20–$50 part that switches your outdoor unit on and off. Installed it runs $150 to $350 in the Valley. What you're paying for, the signs it's failing, and what's a rip-off.
The contactor is the switch in your outdoor unit. When the thermostat calls for cooling, 24 volts pull it closed and it sends 240 volts to the compressor and condenser fan. It opens and closes thousands of times a summer, and in the Valley it does that inside a metal box that sits at 140° on a July afternoon. The contacts pit and burn, ants pack into it, and eventually it sticks open (nothing runs) or sticks closed (the outdoor unit runs even when the thermostat is off).
What it costs
| Contactor, single-pole or double-pole, installed | $150–$350 | Parts, labor, trip, test |
| Same visit as a capacitor | Add $75–$150 | Common to do both on a 10+ year unit |
| After-hours or weekend | Ask first | Premiums vary |
The part is cheap. The price is the truck roll, the diagnosis, and a tech who checks the capacitor, wiring and amp draw while the panel is open. If you're quoted $500+ for a contactor alone, get a second opinion.
Signs it's failing
- The outdoor unit won't start but the indoor fan runs. See not cooling, fan running.
- The outdoor unit keeps running after the thermostat is satisfied or set to Off. A welded-shut contactor. Shut it off at the breaker; running nonstop can freeze the coil and overheat the compressor.
- Buzzing or chattering from the outdoor unit. AC noises explained.
- Visible burn marks or pitting on the contacts.
- Ants. Lots of ants.
Why they fail more here
Heat, cycles, and bugs. A Valley system runs 2,000+ hours a summer and cycles on and off many times a day. Ants are drawn to the electrical field and get crushed between the contacts, which holds them open or causes arcing. A contactor with heavy pitting is a common find on our $59.95 tune-up, and catching it in April is cheaper than a no-cool call in July.
Don't pay for this
- A new outdoor unit for a bad contactor. It's a switch. Replace the switch.
- A "contactor and capacitor and hard-start kit and surge protector" bundle on a unit that only needed a contactor. Ask which part failed and what the test showed.
- A shortcut. Pushing the contactor closed with a stick to "test" it is a burn and shock hazard. Leave it to a tech.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to replace an AC contactor in Tempe?+
$150 to $350 installed for a standard residential unit, including diagnosis. Often done on the first visit.
How long does an AC contactor last in Arizona?+
Often 5 to 10 years. Heat, heavy cycling and ants shorten that. Pitting shows up at tune-ups before it fails.
Can a bad contactor damage my compressor?+
A contactor that's arcing or chattering can stress the compressor and capacitor. One that's stuck closed runs the system nonstop. Replace it when it shows wear.
