The blower motor is the indoor fan in your air handler or furnace. It pushes air across the cold coil and through the ducts. When it fails the outdoor unit may still run, but nothing moves through the vents, and the indoor coil can freeze within the hour.

What it costs

PSC blower motor (single or multi-speed), installed$450–$700Older and builder-grade systems
ECM / variable-speed blower motor, installed$800–$1,200High-efficiency and communicating systems
ECM motor module only (where replaceable)$400–$750Sometimes the electronics fail, not the motor
Blower capacitor (PSC only)$150–$400Often the actual failure

Attic air handlers in Chandler, Gilbert and South Tempe cost more labor than a closet or garage unit. Rooftop package units are in between.

PSC or ECM?

PSC motors are the older, simpler type. They run at one or a few fixed speeds and need a capacitor. They're cheaper to replace.

ECM (electronically commutated) motors ramp up and down, use less power, and are standard on most systems built in the last decade. They cost more, but they're more efficient, and on variable-speed systems there's no substitute.

Signs it's failing

  • Outdoor unit runs, but little or no air at the vents
  • Humming from the indoor unit with no airflow
  • Squealing or grinding from the air handler. AC noises
  • Burning or hot electrical smell. Burning smell
  • Airflow that surges or changes on its own
  • Blower runs constantly even with the thermostat fan on Auto (could also be a relay or board)

Warranty first

ECM motors are often covered by the manufacturer's parts warranty if the system was registered. That turns an $1,100 bill into labor only. We check the serial number before quoting. American Standard warranty · Goodman warranty.

Repair or replace

A blower motor on a 6-year-old system is a repair. On a 15-year-old R-22 system with a tired compressor, the repair-or-replace math usually says replace. We'll show both numbers.
