Mini Split vs. Central Air Cost in Phoenix (2026): Which One Fits Your House?

What a single-room ductless mini split costs installed in Phoenix in 2026 compared with central air, and when each makes sense: garages, casitas, additions and whole-house replacements.

"How much does a mini split cost?" and "mini splits vs. central air" come up a lot in the Valley, usually for a garage, a casita, an addition that never cools, or an older home in Arcadia or central Phoenix with tired ducts. Here's how the two compare on price and fit in 2026.

These are market ranges, not our price list. Our number is a written quote after we've seen the space.

What a mini split is

A ductless mini split is a heat pump with an outdoor unit and one or more indoor "heads" mounted on the wall or ceiling, connected by a small refrigerant line through the wall. No ducts. Each head is its own zone with its own remote or thermostat. It cools and heats.

Mini split installed cost in Phoenix

Single zone, 1 head (garage, casita, one room)$3,500 to $6,5009,000 to 24,000 BTU

Wall-mounted heads are the base of the range. Ceiling cassettes, long line runs, a new electrical circuit or a high-efficiency inverter model push it up. Garages need sizing for a 120°+ space with an uninsulated door, not just square footage.

Central air cost for comparison

A ducted central system for a typical 1,400 to 1,800 sq ft Valley home runs about $7,000 to $12,000 installed for a 3 to 3.5 ton split system or heat pump, using the existing ducts. Our cost by size guide has every tonnage.

So for the whole house, central air is the cheaper and simpler choice. For one space the ducts don't reach, a mini split usually wins.

When a mini split makes sense

  • Garage, workshop or gym. No ducts, and you don't want to cool it off the house system.
  • Casita or guest house. Its own controls, its own bill-friendly zone.
  • An addition or converted garage that was never on the original duct design and runs hot all summer.
  • One room that never cools (west-facing office, bonus room over the garage) when a duct fix isn't practical.

When central air makes sense

  • The house already has ducts in decent shape. Replacing central equipment is cheaper than going ductless throughout.
  • You want filtration and even temperatures across every room.
  • You don't want wall heads in every room.
  • Big open floor plans, where a single ducted system covers the space efficiently.

Running costs in Phoenix

Inverter mini splits are among the most efficient systems sold, often 20+ SEER2. You also only cool the rooms you're using, and there's no duct loss, which matters in a 150° attic. For a single room, that's real savings. For a whole house, a variable-speed central heat pump on sealed ducts is the better value.

Rebates

SRP Cool Cash pays $225 per ton for inverter mini splits at 15.2+ SEER2 installed by a licensed contractor, through April 30, 2027. A 2-ton mini split is $450 back. Rebate details.

Mixing both

The most common setup we see: central air for the house, a mini split for the garage or casita. One doesn't replace the other; they cover different spaces.

Questions people ask

How much does a mini split cost in Phoenix?+

A single-zone mini split for a garage, casita or one room typically runs $3,500 to $6,500 installed in 2026. For more than one or two rooms, central air is usually the better value.

Is a mini split cheaper than central air?+

For a single room, yes. For a whole house, central air is usually cheaper to install and run.

Can a mini split cool a garage in Phoenix?+

Yes, if it's sized for the heat. Garages here hit 120°F+ with an uninsulated door, so they need more capacity than square footage alone suggests. Insulating the door helps a lot.

Do mini splits work in Arizona summers?+

Yes. Inverter mini splits are rated for high outdoor temperatures and are among the most efficient systems available. Correct sizing is the key.

Do mini splits qualify for SRP rebates?+

Yes. SRP Cool Cash pays $225 per ton for inverter mini splits at 15.2+ SEER2, installed by a licensed contractor.
