Heat Pump Replacement Cost in Tempe & the East Valley (2026 Prices)

What a new heat pump costs installed in Tempe, Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert in 2026, by tonnage and efficiency tier. What a fair bid includes, heat pump vs. AC with a gas furnace, and how SRP Cool Cash cuts the number.

Most homes built in the Valley since the '90s already have a heat pump: one outdoor unit that cools all summer and runs backwards in winter to heat. When it dies, the question isn't really "heat pump or not." It's what size, what efficiency tier, and what a fair price is. This post is the 2026 answer for Tempe and the East Valley.

These are market ranges, not our price list. Our number is a written quote after we've measured the house.

Is it the heat pump, or one part of it?

Before pricing a replacement, make sure you need one. The common heat pump failures (capacitor, contactor, defrost board, a heat strip, a sticky reversing valve) are repairs, not replacements. Our heat pump repair page has those prices. If your system is under 10 years old, start there.

Replacement makes sense when the compressor or a coil fails on a system past 12 years, when it's an R-22 unit with a leak, or when the repair is more than half the price of a new system.

Installed heat pump cost by size

2 to 2.5 ton$6,000 to $9,500Condos, casitas, small single story
3 to 3.5 ton$7,000 to $12,0001,400 to 1,800 sq ft, the most common size
4 ton$8,000 to $13,5001,800 to 2,200 sq ft
5 ton$9,000 to $15,000Large single story, or one of two systems

Split system: outdoor heat pump plus matched air handler with heat strips. Value tier 14.3 SEER2 through mid-tier 15.2 to 16 SEER2. Rooftop package heat pumps run about $500 to $1,000 more per size; see our rooftop package unit post.

What the efficiency tiers cost

  • Single-stage, 14.3 to 15.2 SEER2. The base of the ranges above. Runs at one speed, on or off.
  • Two-stage, about 16 to 17 SEER2. Adds roughly $1,500 to $3,500. Runs on low most of the year, which is quieter and pulls more humidity in monsoon season.
  • Variable-speed (inverter), 18+ SEER2. Adds roughly $3,500 to $7,000. The best comfort and the lowest summer bills, and the biggest SRP rebate tier.

The move from 14.3 to 15.2+ almost always pays back here, and it's the line for SRP Cool Cash. Past that, it depends on how much you're home and how high your summer bill runs.

Heat pump vs. AC with a gas furnace

In Tempe, the heat pump wins for most homes. Heating runs are short and mild, a heat pump heats at roughly two to three times the efficiency of electric resistance heat, and you drop the gas furnace's maintenance and safety checks. Swapping an AC-and-gas-furnace system to a heat pump usually adds a few hundred dollars for capping gas and an electrical circuit for the air handler's heat strips.

Keep the gas furnace if it's young and working, or if you just like gas heat. A good contractor quotes both and lets you pick.

What a fair heat pump bid includes

  • Outdoor heat pump and matched indoor coil and air handler, with both model numbers and the SEER2 rating on the quote
  • Heat strips sized to the house (5 to 10 kW is typical here) and the breaker to match
  • Line set replaced, or flushed and pressure-tested if it's sound and the right size
  • A heat pump thermostat wired with the O/B reversing wire set correctly (a common DIY miss)
  • Condensate drain, secondary pan and float switch
  • Permit and inspection, refrigerant charge, startup, airflow test
  • SRP Cool Cash paperwork, if you're on SRP

What pushes the price up

  • Attic air handler. Common in 1990s and newer two-story homes. Typically adds $500 to $1,500 in labor over a closet or garage unit.
  • Ductwork. A new heat pump on leaking ducts wastes the upgrade. Sealing or partial replacement runs $1,000 to $4,000, and it's cheapest while the air handler is out. See the ductwork cost guide.
  • Electrical. Older panels sometimes need a new breaker or circuit for the air handler's heat strips.
  • Two systems. Roughly double, with some savings on the second unit from one trip and one permit.

Rebates that apply in 2026

SRP customers (most of Tempe, Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert) get Cool Cash: $75 per ton single-stage, $150 two-stage, $225 variable-speed, on 15.2+ SEER2 systems. A 4-ton variable-speed heat pump is $900 back. APS ended its equipment rebate in January 2026, and the federal 25C credit expired at the end of 2025. Full rebate breakdown.

How long a heat pump lasts here

Plan on 10 to 15 years in the Valley. A heat pump works all year, so it racks up more hours than an AC-only system in the same climate. Annual tune-ups and clean coils are what get you to the long end.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to replace a heat pump in Tempe?+

Most 3 to 4 ton split heat pump replacements in Tempe run $7,000 to $13,500 installed in 2026, including the matched air handler, heat strips, permit and startup. Two-stage and variable-speed systems cost more.

Is a heat pump more expensive than an AC?+

Only slightly. A heat pump is basically an AC with a reversing valve, so the equipment usually costs a few hundred to about $1,500 more than a straight AC of the same size and tier. In the Valley it replaces the furnace too.

Can I replace just the outdoor heat pump unit?+

You can, but it's rarely smart. A mismatched indoor coil cuts efficiency, usually voids the parts warranty, and often disqualifies the SRP rebate, which requires an AHRI-matched system.

Do heat pumps work in Phoenix winters?+

Yes. Valley winters are the mild conditions heat pumps are built for. The heat strips only kick in on the coldest mornings or during defrost.

How long does a heat pump replacement take?+

Most are one day. An attic air handler, duct work or a new electrical circuit can push it to a second day.
